The Value of DBSA Support Groups
DBSA support groups provide the kind of sharing and caring that is crucial for a lifetime of wellness.
DBSA support groups:
- Give you the opportunity to reach out to others and benefit from the experience of those who have “been there.”
- Motivate you to follow your treatment plan.
- Help you understand that a mood disorder does not define who you are.
- Help you rediscover strengths and humor you may have thought you had lost.
- Provide a forum for mutual acceptance, understanding and self-discovery.
Remember, support groups are not a substitute for professional care. DBSA chapters and support groups do not endorse or recommend the use of any specific treatment or medication. For advice about specific treatment or medication, individuals should consult their physicians and/or mental health professionals.
Our goals as a DBSA Chapter are :
- Help people successfully manage their disorder.
- Provide emotional support and the wisdom of experience to patients, families and friends.
- Build self-esteem and empower participants to actively improve their life, and the lives of others affected by depression or bipolar disorder.
- Eliminate discrimination and stigma related to depression and bipolar disorder.
- Reach all individuals in the community affected by depression or bipolar disorder with opportunities for support and empowerment.
- Educate chapter participants and the public-through programs and resources-about mood disorders.
- Help participants rediscover strength and humor they may have felt they lost.
We are not health care professionals, nor are we a crisis center (we can and will provide information about crisis services to those in need). We do not advocate a particular treatment or service provider. Each of us is the authority on what we need.
Remember, together we know more than one of us alone!
